Some notes…

First, on the Categories: If you see a post with the Meliantha category, it’ll be a post with a story involved.  The other category will tell you which chapter it’s from. Posts in the Candlekeep category are informational: things about the world and what’s in it.

Secondly, despite being mostly high fantasy, there are genuinely evil people and creatures in Faerun. Not all things go well, which is why people like Meliantha adventure: to try to stop them.  There can be bad things that happen – not just violence, but instances of torture, slavery and unpleasant assaults.  There’s going to be warnings on them, and I put a system that you need to click to be allowed to read, but be aware: dark things can – and do – happen.

Duty and Loyalty

The next morning dawned clear, and a bit cool, as the year was shading into fall.  While there was still a little pain, Meliantha took up her sword and went to the practice yard, to do her morning devotions – which involved both prayer and weapons training.  She was still integrating the things she’d learned from Shen Gao into her battle-skills.  Some of the soldiers watched her moving Chainbreaker around, first the standard sword-drills, then into the advanced, and finally her own training.  It was a thing both spirit-cleansing and physically awakening for her, and when she stopped, she felt mentally much better.

As she walked towards the stairs to the quarters she’d been assigned (and then, she expected, to a bath), she heard someone talking: Continue reading →

Beheading the Besiegers

Blood dripping from her blade, Meliantha cut down one of the orcs attacking the Lady’s Manse, then a second, and then a third, and then, she vanished.

The Trip Home

TWO YEARS LATER

Meliantha felt the incoming attack, more than heard or saw, and rolled forwards from her kneeling position, letting the kick go over her head, then used to roll to get to her feet. Spinning as she rose, she turned to greet the elderly man who she had been staying with.

A Battle, And A Parting Of The Ways.

The rough, muddy slope was also slippery, and both Caelan and Meliantha nearly fell a couple of times. When they stepped out, it was through a roughly carved hole into a stone corridor that smelled ancient and musty. Caelan made a disapproving noise, and Meliantha shot him a look, then rolled her eyes, and glanced around. Obvious muddy prints showed the way to go, and so they followed them.

The Vast Swamp.

The morning found them meeting three lizardfolk, who were to be their guide. It took some time to get ready, as the lizardfolk were looking for some fresh meat, but finally H’kskaa, Takaa and L’ssha were ready. They moved through the swamp slowly, the three lizardfolk leading them through parts of the swamp that were easier to get through for those without the ability to breathe water. Still, there was a bit of slogging through waist-deep water to deal with.

Negotiations

The hobgoblins led the two adventurers to a rude campsite. As they walked, they could see there were few of them unwounded, that supplies were low, and that even the lowest ranked laborers were armed.

Their guide brought them to a rude open hut, below what most would expect from the militaristic hobgoblins. Within was a massive, scarred example of the kind, one arm bound up and splinted as he roared at his underlings. At a glance from one of those, he spun, and his eyes narrowed.

[What are they doing here? Did you bring assassins to me, traitors?] he demanded.

A Diversion, Then Unto the Swamps

The two adventurers travelled across the landscape, hiking through the light forest by day, then camping at night. The enchanted tent came in handy, keeping them safe as night. Meliantha would regularly fend off Caelar’s advances, but found herself warming to him. At the same time, she was suspicious of his motives – why would anyone want to be with her? She was no beauty.

Still, she found herself amused by it, even as she stayed on her guard.

Stepping Into The Shadows

The morning, as Meliantha expected, brought more questions than answers.

As far as anyone could tell, Caelar Terathian was precisely as he appeared: a member of the secret intelligence apparatus of the Zhentarim, a follower of Bane, and an emissary looking for allies to stop Cyricists from awakening one of the more terrible non-divine threats the area had ever known. Black Sunset

The Marliir Estate, Dining Room

“DEATH TO THE COUNT! CYRIC’S CURSE ON HIM!”

The visiting merchant’s dagger came up to strike the count, but before it came down again, the lady he was sitting next to had brought her fist up between his thighs. With a heartfelt scream of agony, he dropped the dagger before falling backwards into the lady’s lap. She brought her elbow down onto his throat and held it there until the guards arrive to drag him off.

She took off her snood, and as she did, the circlet became a hat of deep green sporting an iridescent band, the lady’s skim darkened to a deep grey, her eyes changed from blue to a deep violet, and her hair shifted from a complex braid to a set of black ringlets.

“Quite right, my lord Count, there was someone looking to take your life. I do wonder who would benefit from it,” Meliantha added, thoughtfully, looking around the room for anyone who seemed less than surprised.
